Why do you need a cervical smear ?
A cervical smear test is a routing screening that checks for abnormal cell changes on the cervix, Which could indicate a risk of cervical cancer .
What happens during a cervical smear treatment?
During your treatment, the nurse will cleanse the area and will gently insert a small device called a speculum into your vagina to hold it open and allow clear access to the cervix. This may feel a little uncomfortable but should not be painful.
What ia collected during the procedure?
A small brush or small spatula is used to collect a sample of cells from the surface of your cervix. The process only takes a few seconds.
What happens after the test ?
Most people can return to normal activities right away. You may experience some mild spotting or cramping afterwards, but this usually oases quickly.
When will I get the results ?
Results are typically available within a few days to a couple of weeks..
Why is it important to have a smear test?
Cervical smear tests can detect early changes before they develop into cancer. Regular screening saves lives by catching problems early when they are most treatable.
What age should you have a smear test ?
In the Uk , cervical smears are routinely offered through the NHS age 25-49 every 3 years . Ages 50-64 every 5 years . Cervical smears are not offered to patient under 25 unless you are experiencing symptoms or have concerns.
